You’re doing social media wrong

Promoting your business on social media is not difficult, and doesn’t have to be expensive.

When I talk about social media, usually the first response I get is that it is “too expensive” or “too difficult” – nether of which are true.

When they talk of “social media promotion” most people are thinking of paid advertising, which is often both expensive and ineffective for many small businesses. I know a local business that was spending $20K/month on Google Ads and considered it their key marketing tool, so it can work – but how many businesses have that sort of budget?

For most small businesses a better strategy is to use the free tools available to create Business Pages, blog articles, and post updates. These can create engagement with your regular customers and be found by potential customers. Comments of genuine customer satisfaction are like gold.

This is not hard to do, but it is important to be consistent. I often find websites or pages with a few posts for a couple of months from several years ago. This just looks old and stale. Establish a regular pattern of posting and stick to it. Even reposting old articles works given that posts on Facebook might only be seen by as few as 7% of your audience.

Some ideas for posts might be:

  • Announcing new products and stock
  • Photos of customers with their pets, or favourite product
  • Staff profiles – people love knowing who they are interacting with
  • Tutorials on how to use a product
  • The current specials and promotions
  • Reactions to relevant current events

People are always searching for new ideas, solutions to problems, reviews, and similar information. Having a collection of posts on your special subject makes you the valued expert.
